AFL Politics then… and now

HCV members, alumni and their guests are invited to 'AFL Politics then… and now' with Colin Carter on Thursday the 14th of September. Guests will be served a light lunch and have a great opportunity to talk football with a true legend of the game in the lead up to finals.

1870-96 are years “lost” by the AFL even though this is an important part of our game’s history. Colin will share with guests the research from his book “Football’s Forgotten Years” and outline why it is important that these foundation years are included in the history of the competition. Colin will also discuss the future of AFL and the successful bid of the 19th AFL team in Tasmania to commence in 2027.

Numbers are strictly limited, so please book early to avoid missing out. Bookings will close no later than Monday, 11 September unless the event sells out before that date.

About the Speaker:

Colin Carter is a renowned football administrator and is one of Australia’s foremost strategic planners, serving as a senior vice-president of the Boston Consulting Group until 2001, and in recent years as an advisor. He was significant in the formation of the AFL’s salary cap and player draft system and brought together the VFL and the Melbourne Cricket Club to ensure the development of the Great Southern Stand at the MCG. He served on the AFL Commission from 1993 to 2007 and was later president of the Geelong Football Club from 2011 to 2020. In 2021, he was commissioned by the AFL to report on the potential of an AFL club from Tasmania. In the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours list he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for “Service to the Indigenous community through the development of employment and economic opportunities, as a supporter of charitable organisations, and to the sport of Australian Rules Football”.

HCV would like to thank Colin Carter and Allens for their generous support of the event.
